Jyotishmati: An ultimate magical herb

Mahamati Chanakya says that many soldiers have left our army, even if they, who are left, they also go away, but this intellect of mine should not be engrossed in destroying Nanda Vansh completely, if this my intellect continues to work like this, then by preparing the army force will definitely be able to defeat the enemy. Those who have confidence in their intellect can certainly say the same way.

Perseverance, memory, dhruti, etc are the special functions of this intellect. The special power of the intellect is called Medha (Brilliance) Many human beings are intelligent by birth, and many retarded. In fact, there are many literatures described in the scriptures to sharpen the intellect.

Intellectual mantras (Chants) are mentioned in “Chaturvedo”. (Books of Ancient Knowledge). 
In astrology, it has been said to worship Jupiter. In Ayurveda also there is a description of such intellect-enhancing substances whose rational use can make the intellect sharp. Out of those many substances, there is a special substance “Jyotishmati”.


Lord Charaka and Maharishi Sushruta have called it under Shirovirechana Gana (A unit of Charak & Sushrut of Nasya Therapy). Describing the importance of Shirovirechana, Chakrapanidutt has said that, Just as the tree grows right due to the healthy root, In the same way, the healthy development of the body also takes place due to the health of the head. Shirovirechana has been described in the past.

In the first chapter of Charaka Samhita, whose origin is useful, Jyotishmati is also called among those sixteen medicines.“Seeds of Malkagani are found in the market, from which oil comes out. It is “Vamak” (Therapeutic Vomit substance), and laxative. Charaka has taken it here for the purpose of shirovirechan. The roots of the Jyotishmati creeper are not available in the market, so it is not popular.

Distributions & Habitat

It is found in Sri Lanka, Malaydweep, the Philippines, and India, especially in Punjab, Kashmir, etc. In the Mountain regions, it is grown up to a height of 3000 feet. It is abundant in the Aravalli mountain ranges of Rajasthan. This is the main creeper of the forests of  Kalsi, Dehradun, and Saharanpur.

Chemical composition

  • The seeds contain 30% thick bloody yellowish and odorous oil, a pungent resinous substance, astringent, and 5% alkali.
  • The alkaloids that have been obtained from the seeds are cysteine ​​​​and the other is paniculate.

Jyotishmati As Intellect Enhancer

It has been said in the past that this is a special intellect enhancer substance. Most of the intellect enhancer substances are cold potency(Sheet veerya). The cold potency is meant to increase Dhriti (Perception power), but those intellect enhancer substances which are hot potency (Ushna veerya) substances are meant to increase receptive power and memory power. Jyotishmati is a hot potency intellect enhancer substance, so it helps to improve receptive power and memory power.

Although the controller of the body and mind is said to be the creator Vayu, for Medha (Intellect), Pitta plays a major role. Among five types of Pitta, Sadhak Pitta (one among the subtypes of pitta associated with certain mental faculties and emotions) develops the intellect. The place of the sadhak pitta is said to be the intellect develops.

In being a pitta enhancer, Jyotishmati increases this pitta and proves to be helpful in intellect growth. It is not only an intellect enhancer; it is also beneficial in many other mental diseases due to being called a pulse, energy, and brain booster. Its affection is also used in the form of abhyang in diseases like paralysis, rheumatism, etc.

Jyotishmati as Stimulating Substance

Nowadays, many teenagers destroy their strength and semen through masturbation even before becoming a young men. Due to this, the development of their penis stops, and the excitement is destroyed, due to a lack of sexual desire, they become impotent.

In its therapy, along with curing physical disorders, local remedies are also done. Jyotishmati is often used in local remedies. At the beginning of this disease, measures are taken to calm the excitement, and then measures are taken to awaken and stimulate sexual activities again.

Because Jyotishmati is a stimulating substance, its use, in the beginning, is not suitable. Apart from Vajikaran, it is also Artavajanan (Menstrual Cycle).

For this, it is beneficial to consume roasted Jyotishmati leaf consuming it with Ghee. It stimulates the heart due to heat and reduces heart failure possibilities. This is a blood vessel broadcaster. Because its use increases blood flow. It is also useful in various kinds of inflammations. This is the best medicine for a disease called “Beriberi” caused by a deficiency of Vitamin B.

Jyotishmati for Asthma & Urine Problems

Due to being kaphahar (Corrects Kapha Dosha), it is also used in Asthama. This is the best medicine for Shirovirechana (Nasya Treatment), which has been mentioned earlier.

Due to being hot and diuretic, it is used in phlegm mutra-kachcha (Urination breaks in parts). It stimulates the kidneys and increases the flow of urine. Similarly, digestion and sweating, also reduce fever. It is useful for leprosy. It is also used in the treatment of  Leucoderma.

According to Greek opinion – it is hot and rough in the third degree. It is powerful for the brain and stomach. Its oil is beneficial in rheumatism, rib pain, nerve diseases, and paralysis. It is beneficial in diseases of Kapha and Vata. Its oil is very hot, pungent, bile genic, memory enhancer, and intellect enhancer.
