Arjuna: Distribution and Habitat

The Arjuna is seen across the Indian Subcontinent and is usually found growing on river banks or near dry river beds in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, and south and central India, along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. 

Importance

Silk production: The arjuna is one of the species whose leaves are fed on by the  Antheraea Paphia moth which produces the Tassar silk, wild silk of commercial importance.

Arjuna Tree Description

 Arjuna is a large size deciduous tree. The height of the Arjuna tree reaches up to 25 – 30 feet.  It is an evergreen tree with yellow flowers and conical leaves. It has a smooth gray bark. Fruit is 2.5 – 5 cm long, fibrous woody, Glabrous with 5 hard wings, striated with numerous curved veins. It has a buttressed trunk and a vast spreading crown from which the branches drop downwards. Its leaves are dull green above and pale brown beneath. Arjuna flowers between March to June and fruits between September to November.

Other Species: Terminalia chebula, T. bellrica, and T. ciliata are the other species of Arjun tree found in India.

Cultivation methods: Its fruit is dried in the sunlight and then stored for up to 6 -12 months. Seeds are pre-treated by soaking in the water for 48 hours before sowing. 8 – 9 months seedlings are better to transplant in the field.

Arjuna Uses in multiple Diseases

It strengthens the heart muscles and maintains the heart functioning properly. It also improves the functioning of cardiac muscles. Arjuna is used for the treatment of coronary artery disease.

Practical Uses of Arjuna

1, Arjuna has an astringent effect that acts to detoxify the boll. Its homeostatic properties help to relieve bleeding conditions and control aggravated pitta states.

2, The general cleansing effects of this are to clean urinary infections.

3, In women it can be used to support the uterus and regulate the hormonal cycle. It is given in all kinds of hormonal imbalances, fibroids, cysts & endometriosis, etc. this herb can help to relieve excess bleeding in menorrhagia (abnormally heavy bleeding in menstruation).

4, Arjuna has an effective balancing effect on the Kapha and Pitta doshas of the body. In this way, it helps to heal wounds and ulcerations.

5, This herb is mostly known for cholesterol lowering. It helps to control blood cholesterol levels and can be good for people having atherosclerosis in which cholesterol plaques block arteries at one or multiple sites.

6, it has therapeutic effects on the respiratory system also. As it helps to keep the airways clear and supports to fight against serious lung illnesses.

7, Being a cardiac tonic Arjuna helps to improve energy levels in the body and stimulates stamina so that people can work in a better way without feeling too stressed and fatigued.

8, Because of its pitta pacifying properties, Arjuna can be given to all kinds of external and internal bleeding problems and diseases associated with it.

9, Be it bleeding gums, menorrhagia, excessive bleeding from open wounds, etc. arjuna can be given to any person with such given conditions.

10, Arjuna extracts act as very useful anti-oxidants for the body. It stabilizes the heart when one is suffering from angina or is susceptible to developing it.

Arjuna is beneficial in the management of chest pain (angina). Studies suggest that the bark of Arjuna shows a significant reduction in chest pain by lowering the level of Cholesterol i.e., the stress hormone. Arjuna also increases exercise tolerance, improves HDL levels, and reduces blood pressure in people with stable angina.
