Asthma is a long term inflammatory disease of the airways of the lungs. It led difficulty in breathing. Asthma is a chronic condition that affects the airways in the lungs. Asthma is a chronic medical condition that causes breathing difficulties. The airways are tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs. If you have asthma, the airways can become inflamed and narrowed at times. It makes it harder for air to flow out of your airways when you breathe out. Asthma is a chronic and recurring condition. It has a tendency to keep appearing for years or even life time. Asthma is broken down into types based on the cause and the severity of symptoms.
Intermittent: This type of asthma comes and goes so you can feel normal in between asthma flares.
Persistent: Persistent asthma means you have symptoms much of the time. Symptoms can be mild, moderate or severe. Healthcare providers base asthma severity on how often you have symptoms. They also consider how well you can do things during an attack.

How Many Types Of Asthma described in Ayurveda?
As per Ayurveda, Asthma is mainly caused by the Vata and Kapha Doshas. Asthma is broadly classified into five types.
- Mahaswasa (Dyspnoea major)
- Urdhawaswasa (Expiratory Dyspnoea)
- Chinna swasa (Chynestroke respiration)
- Kshudra swasa (Dyspnoea minor)
- Tamak Swasa (Bronchial Asthma)
Mahaswasa: Dyspnoea major
Symptoms of Maha Shwasa : Because of upward movement of aggravated Vayu a patient take deep breath associated with loud sound continuously , In present era due to stressful modern living incidence of Bronchial Asthma are increases. Smoking, Atmospheric Pollution, Occupational causes, Dietary factors these are etiological factors of Asthma. Mental stamina and his deep inspiration becomes audible even from distance this ailment is called Maha Shwas a patient suffering from this aliment succumbs to death instantaneously.
Urdhawaswasa: (Expiratory Dyspnoea)
Symptoms of Urdhwa Shwas : In Urdhwa Shwas following symptoms are seen Prolonged Expiration and inability to have Inspiration. Adhesion of mouth and breathing channels with phlegm, Affliction with aggravated Vayu. Looking with eye ball moved upwards, Bewildered eyes, Unconsciousness, Affliction with excessive pain, Dryness Of mouth, Dislike for everything. This can be correlated with Stertorous Breathing.
Chinna swasa (Chynestroke respiration)
Chinna Swasa Symptoms: Interrupted breathing. Breathing is accompanied with pain as though the vital organs are being injured. Usually compared to Chynestroke breathing meaning gradual deepening and diminishing respiration. Interruption or stoppage of breath ( Shwasiti Vichinnam) on account of affliction of all the channels carrying vital air. Great Distress , Affliction with pain as if a vital organ (marma) is injured , Affliction with constipation associated with flatulence sweating and fainting, Burning sensation in the region of urinary bladder, Excessive tears in the eyes, Excessive Emaciation ,One of the eyes becomes red while the patient struggles for breath, Mental bewilderment, Dryness in mouth
Kshudra swasa (Dyspnoea minor)
Symptoms of Kshudra Shwas : Vayu mildly aggravated in the Koshta (gastrointestinal tract) on account of exertion and unctuous regimen causes Kshudra Shwas (mild dyspnoea). It does not cause much discomfort in the body. The body is not too much afflicted thereby. It is not painful as other forms of Asthma. It does not obstruct the proper movement of food and drink. It does not cause any pain or complication in sense organs. This variety of dyspnoea is curable. This can be correlated with Dyspnoea on Effort.
Tamak Swasa (Bronchial Asthma)
Typical Symptoms include recurrent episodes of Chest tightness, Breathlessness and Cough these symptoms get exaggerated in cold weather, exposure to airborne allergens or pollutants. Due to increased Kapha Dosha there occurs blockage in respiratory system due to this natural direction of Vata get obstructed and Vata Dosha gets Pratiloma Gati so that Vata Dosha dryness is increased and natural lubrication is disturbed causing difficulty in breathing. Asthma is an airway disease that can be classified physiologically as a variable and partially reversible obstruction to air flow and pathologically with overdeveloped mucus glands. Bronchial inflammation also causes narrowing due to oedema and swelling caused by immune response to allergens. During an asthma episode inflamed airways react to environmental triggers. The airway narrow and produce exceeds mucus, making it difficult to breath.
Which Asthma is curable, incurable and Most suffering Asthma?
Kshudra swasa (Dyspnoea minor) and Tamak swasa (Bronchial Asthma) is curable in the above mentioned 5 types of Asthma And the other 3 Asthmas are incurable. Tamak Asthma is also incurable if it happens to a weak person.
Hiccup and respiratory disease extremely terrible. Many diseases like fever etc. are may life-killers. But like Asthma and hiccups are immediately fatal. Other such diseases are not immediately fatal.

Pathya & Apathya (Do's & Don'ts)
Do’s (Pathya): Use of Godhuma (wheat), Old rice, Munga (green gram), Kulathi (Horse gram), Jav (barley), Aarya(snake gourd), Garlic, Turmeric, Ginger, Black pepper, Luke warm water, Goat milk, Honey, Pranayama, Yoga.
Don’ts (Apathya): Intake of Heavy, Cold diet, Udad (black gram), Deep Fried items, Mustard leaves, Fish, Sweets, Chilled water, Stored food items, Curd, suppression of natural urges, excessive physical exertion, exposure to cold & humid atmosphere, smoke, dust, Fumes, pollutants and pollen.

Causes Of Asthma
As per Ayurveda the causes of Asthma are Intake of dry, cold, heavy, incompatible food and irregular intake of food, Excessive Intake of black gram, beans, sesame, meat of aquatic animals, Intake of cold water and exposure to cold climate, exposure to dust, smoke and wind, excessive exercise, over indulge in the sexual activity, trauma to throat, chest and vital organs and suppression of natural urges.
Sudden weather changes (e.g. cold winds, humidity and storms) can trigger asthma in some people. Some of these sudden changes can cause the release of allergens such as pollen that can make asthma worse in people whose asthma is allergy-related. Cold air can also have a direct irritant effect on inflamed airways.
