Devdali Benefits and Uses
In Sanskrit its names are Jimutak, Kantphala, Garagari, Koshphala, Ghora, Vishgani, Lomashpatrika, Devdali, Veni, Saha, Katphala, Kadamba, Vishaha, Karkati, Sarmushika, Vrittkosha, Turangika, Devdalika, Pita etc.
In Hindi, Vindal is called Devdali, Sanaiya, Vidali, Ghusran.
In Bengali it is called Ghoshakalata, Ghosha, Pitaghosha, Devtada. It is called Kukdavel in Gujarati. It is produced in large quantities in provinces like Gujarat, Mumbai, Sindh, Dhaka, Bengal etc. And it is found less in Bihar and its neighboring provinces. This is a herb of creeper species. Its roots remain alive the whole year in the ground and germinate when it rains. They survive throughout the rainy season and spread. At the beginning of winter, this creeper dries up and gets destroyed.
There are three types of them but all three have the same properties. The leaves of all three creepers are similar but the color of the flowers is different. Whose colors are white, red, and yellow. Due to the different flower colors, it is considered to be of three types of Devdali.
Its leaves are one and a half inches long and circular, five-parted, and have sharp edges. The leaf stems are one to two inches long. The fruits are one and a half inches long, half an inch thick, oval, and surrounded with hard thorns. There is a thin skin on the fruits which gets separated automatically when the fruit ripens and dries. There are three hairs inside the fruits and they are filled with seeds. Small fruits have only one part. The fruits taste very bitter. Its roots are porous and full of juice. Its roots have a strong smell. And its taste is also bitter.

Description
In the book of Nighantu, Devdali is described as Bitter, Pungent, hot, Antidote, Emetic, Anti-swelling, Phlegm, Jaundice, Fever, Cough, Loss of appetite, Breathlessness, Anaemia, Anti-Helminthic, Anti-Tuberculosis.
Fruit: It is bitter and beneficial in curing swelling, worms, phlegm, colic, dysentery, and Jaundice. The roots are also useful in all the diseases mentioned above.
According to Unani medicine, hot and dry are beneficial in ascites, eliminating cough, Asthma, and fever.
In North India, this medicine is considered wonderful for ascites.
The fruits of this medicine have a kind of fibrous membrane inside. By drying it and smelling it, all the problems inside the nose go away.
In Konkan, the extract of this medicine is given on snake poison, and in Cholera, it is to be consumed as many times as there is diarrhoea. If there is a high fever then the extract of this medicine is applied on the entire body and in the case of Jaundice, it is applied on the head and also consumed. Its extract cures Colic.
How to prepare Devdali Juice
Take five fresh fruits of devdali, Peel off the thorny skin of the fruits. Take out seeds from fruits. Now put the remaining portion in one glass of water and keep it for half an hour. Take a vessel made of clay or glass. After half an hour, mash the mixture well with your hands. The water will turn slightly white and filter this water and fill it in a glass bottle. Thus juice is ready. This juice can be used for 6 to 7 days.
How to prepare Devdali Satva (Extract)
Take some fruits of Devdali, separate the outer skin and the inner seeds, and grind it thoroughly. After kneading well, squeeze the mixture keep water in the shadow, and let it dry. when dry completely then make a powder of this mixture. When it becomes a fine powder, strain it and fill it in a dry and clean glass jar. The extract is prepared like this. The shelf life of this mixture is 6 months.
Satva and juice are beneficial if made from fresh fruits. If green is not available then make it from dried devdali fruits.
Devdali Uses in Diseases
- The bitter fiber inside the Devdali fruit is beneficial in snake bites.
- In case of constipation, take the powder of Devdali Panchang (All parts powder) 3 grams, 7 grams of Big Harad powder, add honey in all these, and make a pill. Consuming these tablets twice a day with milk is beneficial.
- By soaking a cloth wick in the juice of devdali juice and placing it in the vagina, the menstrual flow of a woman whose menstrual flow has stopped starts again.
- Pregnant women start bleeding by eating 10 grams of Devdali powder. Therefore, pregnant women should not use it.
- Cold: If the cold is severe with heavy headache, heaviness in the head, pain in the eyes, or eyes have become red due to cold, foul-smelling mucus is coming out from the nose, or insects have appeared, If the nose starts flowing due to heat or phlegm, Devdali can be used for all these diseases. It is beneficial to use the Devdali Powder in the morning. If you want to do it at other times then do it in the evening, do not use this medicine in strong sunlight. Hang your head down from the bed and put two drops of Devdali’s juice in both nostrils. If you are having a headache on one side, then put devdali juice on the same side nostril.
- As soon as you put the juice of Devdali in the nose, pull it upwards with the help of breath and keep sleeping with the head hanging down for two to five minutes. If you sneeze and the medicine gets into your throat, spit it out immediately.
- If there are worms in the stomach then give 50 grams of Devdali’s juice, the worms will come out with urine or stool. If there is a wound and insects have settled on it, then keep a cotton pad soaked in the juice of devdali, and the insects will be destroyed.
- Take dry bitter gourd powder and mix it with devdali fruit juice, soak one plain cloth into this mixture, and apply. Continue this remedy for a minimum of a week, piles will be cured.
- A patient suffering from insanity benefits by giving Nashya (put drops in nostrils) according to the prescribed method.
- Consuming fruit powder with hot water cures leprosy.
Leprosy Treatment
By doing the following experiments for leprosy, leprosy can be cured permanently.
Mix the powder of devdali fruits in water, make a doe of this mixture, and prepare small pills and dry pills in the sunlight. Eat this pill with jaggery in the morning during the summer season, massage the body with neem oil, and take a sun bath for few minutes. After some time you will start having diarrhoea which will get cured on its own by evening.
The patient should eat Black lentil and horse gram in the evening. If you do this for two weeks, there will be blisters on the skin which will heal in three days. By doing this experiment continuously for seven weeks, white leprosy will be destroyed no matter how old it is.
All the troubles that arise while taking the medicine get destroyed on their own.
